When unease turns into tragedy

In Kamagugu, a quiet residential area just outside Mbombela, it was a sense of something being deeply wrong that first raised the alarm. A foul smell drifts from a nearby house. Flies are gathering in unusual numbers. Phone calls to neighbours that went unanswered for days.

For residents, the signs were unsettling enough to prompt a call to the police. What officers found inside the locked home on Tuesday afternoon would leave the community shaken.

A locked house and a horrifying discovery

Police arrived at the property shortly after 4.30 pm and were shown the house that had become the source of concern. There were no visible signs of forced entry, adding to the mystery. The Mbombela Disaster Management team was called in to help unlock the door.

Inside, the house appeared ransacked. As rooms were searched, officers discovered the decomposing bodies of two women.

The victims were later identified by their families as 64-year-old Eunice Mahlodi and 20-year-old Eugenia Dineo Masuku.

Disturbing details emerge

According to Jabu Ndubane, both women were found half-naked. Masuku’s body was discovered in her bedroom with her hands tied using cables. A cable was also found around her neck, leading investigators to suspect she may have been strangled. Blood stains were visible in the room.

Early indications suggest that items such as cellphones may have been stolen from the house. Emergency services confirmed that both women had already died by the time authorities arrived, with the bodies showing early signs of decomposition.

A community in shock

News of the discovery spread quickly through Kamagugu and nearby areas. On local social media groups, residents expressed fear and anger, with many calling for increased patrols and faster arrests. Others shared messages of sympathy for the families, describing the incident as a brutal reminder of how vulnerable even familiar neighbourhoods can be.

For many locals, the fact that neighbours were the ones to raise the alarm has also sparked conversations about looking out for one another and acting early when something feels off.

Police launch urgent manhunt

The Mpumalanga police have opened two counts of murder and confirmed that a specialised investigation team has been appointed under the leadership of Zeph Mkhwanazi.

A 72-hour plan has been activated, with investigators working to track down those responsible. Police say the circumstances surrounding the killings are still under investigation and have urged anyone with information to come forward.

More questions than answers

As Kamagugu mourns, the unanswered questions remain heavy. How did two women die inside a locked home without signs of forced entry? Who was responsible, and how long had the house been silent before concern turned into action?

For now, residents wait anxiously for arrests, hoping that justice will come swiftly for Eunice Mahlodi and Eugenia Dineo Masuku and that a sense of safety can slowly return to their streets.
