Community on edge as search continues

Rescue teams in Limpopo are braving dangerous floodwaters in Mbaula village, near Giyani, in a desperate search for five-year-old Siyanda Baloyi. The boy went missing on Thursday morning, 15 January 2026, when he and his mother were reportedly swept away while trying to evacuate their home.

Police say Siyanda’s mother was rescued, having been trapped against a tree, but the child remains unaccounted for. Authorities have intensified efforts, with multi-disciplinary teams, including the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), navigating treacherous waters to locate him.

Authorities warn communities of flood dangers

Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers, has urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement and avoid crossing rivers, streams, or bridges during flooding.

“Floodwaters are unpredictable and extremely dangerous,” Scheepers said. “Our teams are working around the clock to reach and assist residents, but safety must remain the top priority.”

The public is being asked to provide any information that could help locate Siyanda safely. Tip-offs can be given to Detective Lieutenant Colonel Mbalati JJ at 082 565 6491 or via Crime Stop at 08600 10111.

Flood tragedies extend beyond Limpopo

Tragedy has struck elsewhere in South Africa as well. In Mpumalanga, a two-year-old boy, Sibusiso Mnisi, drowned in Msholozi C, White River, after being swept away by a strong stream current.

Police confirmed the boy’s mother had left the house to cross the stream, unaware her toddler had followed. Despite emergency personnel attending the scene immediately, the child could not be saved. An inquest is underway as authorities investigate the circumstances.

A stark reminder of nature’s power

These incidents highlight the rising dangers of seasonal flooding in South Africa, particularly in rural areas where homes are close to rivers and streams. Social media users in Limpopo have shared heartfelt messages of hope for Siyanda’s safe return, while also warning others to heed official safety advice.

Officials continue to appeal for calm, vigilance, and community cooperation as the search for Siyanda Baloyi intensifies, stressing that even the smallest pieces of information could make the difference in a rescue operation.
