Just when many Joburg residents thought they had mastered the art of surviving load shedding, another round of planned power cuts is on the cards. This time, however, it is not Eskom. It is routine network maintenance by City Power.

Across five regions, from the leafy streets of Rosebank to the southern edges of Ennerdale, electricity will be switched off temporarily while technicians service substations and switching stations. According to City Power, the work forms part of its ongoing programme to strengthen infrastructure and improve service delivery.

For a city that depends on electricity for everything from remote work to small businesses and traffic flow, even planned interruptions require careful planning.

Tuesday: Northriding and Northgate first in line

The week kicks off on Tuesday, 17 February, with maintenance at the Northriding Substation under the Randburg Service Delivery Centre.

Power will be off from 9am to 5pm in:

  • Northgate

  • Northriding

  • Pick n Pay at Northgate

For many residents in the area, this means working from coffee shops or rearranging school and business schedules. Social media chatter has already begun, with locals sharing reminders to charge devices and prep meals in advance.

Wednesday: Rosebank and surrounds affected

On Wednesday, 18 February, attention shifts to the Rosebank Substation. Maintenance under the Hursthill SDC will interrupt supply from 8:30am until 4pm.

Areas impacted include:

  • Parkwood

  • Rosebank

  • Parts of Saxonwold

In a business district like Rosebank, home to corporate offices, retail hubs, and hotels, even a few hours without power can be disruptive. Many businesses in the area rely on generators, but smaller shops and residents will feel the pinch.

Thursday: Ferndale and Ennerdale extensions

Thursday, 19 February, brings two separate operations.

Ferndale residents will experience an outage from 9am to 5pm as City Power services the Harley Street Substation under the Randburg SDC.

At the same time, the Carina Switching Station in Lenasia will undergo maintenance. This will affect Ennerdale Extensions 1 and 2 from 8am to 4pm.

For households in the south, particularly in Ennerdale, the reality of scheduled maintenance often comes with concerns about food spoilage and security. Residents are being encouraged to plan ahead and minimise unnecessary electricity use before and after the interruption.

Friday: The biggest outage of the week

The most extensive power cut is scheduled for Friday, 20 February, when the Gresswold Substation under the Alexandra SDC undergoes maintenance.

From 8am to 4pm, electricity will be off in:

  • Savoy

  • Birnam

  • Waverley

  • Bramley

  • Sunningdale

  • Fairmont

  • Sandringham

  • Bramley Park

  • Athol Standby

  • Highlands North

  • Barnard Avenue

This cluster of northern suburbs includes residential areas and busy transport routes. Residents are advised to prepare for a full working day without electricity.

Safety first: Treat all connections as live

City Power has issued its standard warning to customers in all affected areas. Supply may be restored at any time during the scheduled window, so electricity points should always be treated as live.

The utility has acknowledged the inconvenience and apologised for the disruption. While planned maintenance can be frustrating, City Power maintains that the work is necessary to prevent larger, unplanned failures in the future.

Why this matters for Joburg

Johannesburg’s power infrastructure has faced strain over the years, with vandalism, cable theft, and ageing equipment contributing to breakdowns. Preventative maintenance is intended to reduce long-term outages and stabilise supply.

For residents, the key message is simple: plan ahead. Charge devices, switch off appliances, and keep safety top of mind.

If your area is on the list this week, consider it a reminder of just how central electricity is to daily life in the city.
