What If Caterpillar Built a Bakkie? Meet the Cat Truck Concept
Caterpillar has answered a question no one askedbut everyone now wants to see.
The company has unveiled the Cat Truck, a concept bakkie designed as the answer to: “What if Caterpillar built a pickup truck?”
The Base
The Cat Truck isn’t built from the ground up. Instead, Caterpillar looked to the Ford F-450 Super Duty as the base for the concept.
It gains:
-
A bespoke front grille
-
Revised headlamps
-
Cat technology throughout
Under the bonnet, it likely employs the same engine as the heavy-duty Ford: a 6.7-litre V8 turbodiesel producing 350 kW and over 1,400 N.m of torque.
The Tech
The interior hosts “advanced” Caterpillar technology, including:
-
“Detect Camera” technology
-
A driver monitoring system
-
An AI assistant
-
An additional screen with VisionLink cloud-based telematics software
The VisionLink setup allows owners to monitor and manage fleets, and check machine health.
The Drone
Perhaps the quirkiest feature: an autonomous drone launching station.
Owners can survey construction sites or even deliver parts via drone.
The Philosophy
According to Caterpillar, the Cat Truck concept isn’t just about power, torque, and towing capacity. It’s about “redefining” how technology can power the modern job site.
“The Cat Truck showcases how AI, autonomy, and connected job site technology can work together to drive safer, more efficient operations.”
The Bottom Line
It’s a Ford F-450 with Caterpillar badges, AI, and a drone.
Will it ever be built? Unlikely. But as a concept, it’s a fascinating glimpse into how Caterpillar thinks about the future of workand the vehicles that will do it.
