Gauteng Braces For Cold, Rainy Weather As Autumn Tightens Its Grip
If the past few mornings felt a little too chilly for comfort, you’re not imagining things. Gauteng residents are waking up to a taste of winter as cooler temperatures and rain begin moving across the province.
According to the South African Weather Service, the shift in weather patterns signals the gradual transition from late summer into autumn, with cold mornings, gusty winds and scattered rainfall expected over the coming days.
For many Joburg commuters, it means digging out jackets a little earlier than usual and preparing for frosty car windscreens before sunrise.
Cold Mornings Set The Tone For The Week
Since the weekend, parts of Gauteng have already experienced blustery winds and noticeably colder mornings. Weather forecasters say these conditions are likely to persist for several more days as cooler air settles over the northern parts of the country.
Early morning temperatures could drop sharply, particularly in southern areas of Johannesburg and towns such as Vereeniging. Motorists heading out before sunrise may even encounter icy windscreens in some spots.
While daytime temperatures will remain relatively mild, the bite of the cold will be most noticeable at dawn and after sunset.
Minimum temperatures across parts of the province are expected to hover around 11°C in the coming days, reinforcing the sense that autumn has officially arrived.
Rain Expected In Johannesburg And Pretoria
Alongside the colder air, rainfall is also on the cards.
Johannesburg is forecast to receive rain later this week, with about a 60 percent chance of showers on Thursday. Daytime temperatures could struggle to climb beyond around 20°C, making it one of the cooler days of the week.
Rain is expected to linger into the weekend as the weather system continues moving across the province.
In Pretoria, similar conditions are expected. The capital is forecast to see a 60 percent chance of rain on both Thursday and Friday, with temperatures ranging from about 14°C in the morning to highs of around 22°C during the day.
A Tale Of Two Weather Systems Across South Africa
While Gauteng residents reach for coats and umbrellas, the story looks very different in the western parts of the country.
Forecasters warn that western and south western regions of South Africa could experience very hot to extremely hot conditions during the same period.
The weather service has indicated that heatwave conditions may develop after a brief cooler spell earlier this month. In meteorological terms, a heatwave occurs when temperatures rise at least 5°C above the average maximum of the hottest month and remain there for three or more consecutive days.
This contrast highlights just how varied South Africa’s climate can be at this time of year. While Gauteng edges closer to winter like mornings, parts of the Western Cape and surrounding regions may be dealing with intense heat instead.
For now, Gauteng residents should prepare for a colder, wetter stretch of weather and possibly their first real reminder that winter is slowly creeping closer.
