South Africa’s largest online retailer, Takealot, has confirmed it will participate in Black Friday 2026 through its annual Blue Dot Sale, with TakealotMORE subscribers set to receive additional benefits and member-only savings.

According to MyBroadband, Takealot said it would once again take part in Black Friday, with a spokesperson stating: ”As the retailer that brought Black Friday to South Africa in 2012, we’ll naturally be participating again this year.”

The retailer said TakealotMORE members would receive delivery benefits that allow them to shop Black Friday deals repeatedly, as well as ”additional member-only savings across Mr D and Takealot.”

Takealot has not yet disclosed the full range of 2026 promotions or specific discounts. The company said more details would be announced closer to the shopping event.

Surge in online traffic

Black Friday falls on 27 November 2026, following the US Thanksgiving holiday on 26 November. Takealot has historically extended the shopping period beyond a single day through its Blue Dot Sale.

The scale of the event has grown substantially since Takealot’s first Black Friday campaign in 2012, when it recorded about R1 million in sales over the weekend. MyBroadband reports that its Black Friday gross merchandise value rose to R87 million in 2017 and exceeded R196 million in 2018. The retailer also said it recorded its highest daily visits, orders and units processed during Black Friday 2025.

Previous coverage by BusinessTech shows how Black Friday has evolved into an extended sales season in South Africa, with Takealot’s Blue Dot campaign expanding into a countdown period rather than being confined to the traditional Friday.

Takealot’s ability to handle the expected surge in online traffic will also be crucial. ITWeb recently highlighted the importance of the technology and logistics infrastructure supporting major online sales events, noting that Black Friday success depends heavily on the systems operating behind the scenes.

Platform stability

Takealot said it was continuing to invest in platform stability ahead of the 2026 retail peak.

‘Ensuring platform stability is a continuous process throughout the year, and we’ll continue to invest in this as we head into the retail peak,’ the company said.

It added: ‘We’ll share more about what shoppers can expect, including any announcements and updates, closer to the time.’

The announcement sets the stage for another major battle among South Africa’s online retailers, with consumers expected to see competing Black Friday promotions from Takealot, Amazon and other major platforms as the November shopping season approaches.
