Madlanga Commission Hears Claims Businessman Ze Nxumalo Pressured Police To Arrest Musa Khawula
The ongoing hearings of the Madlanga Commission took another dramatic turn this week after testimony suggested that controversial businessman Ze Nxumalo may have pushed senior police officers to arrest entertainment blogger Musa Khawula.
Evidence presented on Monday painted a picture of behind the scenes communication between Nxumalo and a police officer in Gauteng’s organised crime unit, raising new questions about influence, pressure and the blurred lines between private disputes and criminal investigations.
Defamation Dispute That Sparked The Case
The tension between Nxumalo and Khawula dates back to late 2024. During that period, the businessman opened a defamation case after the outspoken blogger published posts about his private life.
Khawula, who built a reputation online for sharing celebrity gossip and controversial commentary, has often found himself at the centre of legal threats from high profile figures.
According to testimony heard in Pretoria, Nxumalo’s frustration with the pace of the investigation soon became evident.
Police Officer Testifies About Communication
Sergeant Fannie Nkosi from Gauteng’s organised crime unit appeared before the commission and described how he had been in contact with Nxumalo during the dispute.
WhatsApp messages shown to the commission revealed frequent communication between the two men. In several exchanges, Nxumalo reportedly pressed Nkosi about the progress of the case and urged action against Khawula.
At one point, the businessman allegedly suggested that the officer was afraid to arrest the blogger.
However, Nkosi told the commission that he did not personally interpret the messages as direct pressure.
“I never felt that he was pushing,” Nkosi explained during his testimony. “I felt that he was venting because he had opened a case and there was no movement.”
Importantly, Nkosi also confirmed that he was not the investigating officer assigned to the matter.
Arrest Warrant And Sensitive Information Shared
The commission also heard that Nxumalo received a copy of Khawula’s arrest warrant on the same day it was signed by a magistrate.
Nkosi further admitted that he had shared Khawula’s contact details with the businessman. He told the inquiry that he had obtained those details from an SABC presenter named Natasha.
The testimony raised further questions about how sensitive information related to criminal investigations may have been circulated outside official channels.
Why The Madlanga Commission Matters
The Madlanga Commission is currently examining allegations of misconduct and influence involving law enforcement officials and private individuals.
Hearings like Monday’s are meant to unpack whether outside pressure may have played a role in how certain cases were handled.
The appearance of Nxumalo’s name in testimony has added another layer of intrigue to proceedings that have already drawn national attention.
For many observers, the case also highlights the growing legal tension between South Africa’s outspoken online commentators and the powerful figures they write about.
As the commission continues its work, more witnesses are expected to testify, potentially shedding further light on the complicated relationship between media personalities, business figures and the country’s law enforcement agencies.
