There was a moment at the Santiago Bernabéu when it felt like Real Madrid might steady their season. Instead, by the final whistle, the mood had shifted again, from cautious optimism to quiet frustration.

A 1-1 draw against Girona on Friday night has left Madrid chasing shadows in the LaLiga title race, with the gap to leaders Barcelona now stretching in a way that feels increasingly difficult to close.

Valverde Sparks Hope Before Girona Hit Back

The breakthrough came just after halftime, and it was a goal worthy of lifting a title challenge. Federico Valverde stepped up from range and fired a powerful effort that slipped past Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, who misjudged the strike.

For a brief spell, Madrid looked in control. The energy inside the Bernabéu lifted, and there was a sense that the home side could push on and secure a much-needed win.

But Girona had other ideas.

Thomas Lemar, once of Atletico Madrid, produced a moment of real quality to silence the crowd. His strike from the edge of the box flew beyond Andriy Lunin and into the corner, restoring parity and shifting the momentum away from the hosts.

Missed Chances Come Back To Haunt Madrid

If there is one theme that has defined Madrid’s recent league struggles, it is this. Dominance without decisiveness.

Kylian Mbappé had opportunities but could not convert when it mattered. Vinicius Junior also found himself denied, while Gazzaniga produced key saves to keep Girona firmly in the contest.

Even Jude Bellingham, making his first start since January after an impressive cameo in the Champions League, could not unlock the defence before being taken off with one eye on the upcoming European clash.

Madrid pushed late, but the urgency never quite translated into a clear-cut winner.

Barcelona Tighten Their Grip On The Title

While Madrid were dropping points, Barcelona were doing the opposite.

The Catalan side dismantled Espanyol 4-1, with Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal leading the charge in a dominant display. That result has opened up a nine-point gap at the top of the table, a margin that now feels significant with only seven matches left.

For Madrid, the timing could not be worse.

Focus Shifts To Europe As Pressure Builds

There is now a growing sense that Madrid’s season may hinge on the Champions League.

They travel to face Bayern Munich in the second leg of their quarterfinal, trailing 2-1. It is a familiar scenario for a club that has built its modern identity on European comebacks, but this time the pressure feels heavier.

Domestically, the margin for error is gone.

Survival Battles And Late Drama Elsewhere In LaLiga

Beyond the title race, the weekend delivered plenty of drama across Spain.

Sevilla boosted their survival hopes with a 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid, ending a difficult run and giving their campaign new life. Elche also found a crucial victory, edging Valencia 1-0 to keep their fight against relegation alive.

Meanwhile, Real Sociedad and Alaves produced one of the games of the round, sharing the spoils in a thrilling 3-3 draw that saw late drama rescue a point for the visitors.

A Season Slipping Away

For Real Madrid, the bigger picture is becoming harder to ignore.

This was not just another draw. It was another missed opportunity in a title race that now looks increasingly out of reach.

With Barcelona surging and only a handful of games left, Madrid’s focus may soon shift fully to Europe. Because if silverware is coming this season, it may not be from Spain.
