What South Africans need to know about SASSA children’s grants for June 2026
Quick update ahead of June payments
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is set to continue its four-week payment rotation for the country’s children’s grants in June 2026. After disruptions in April and May, the outlook is described as cautiously optimistic following recent departmental changes at national level. The official 2026/27 payment schedule and increases were approved by National Treasury in March 2026.
What will change in grant amounts
The three children’s grants and recent increases confirmed for 2026 are:
- Child Support Grant: R580 (increased from R560 in April 2026).
- Foster Child Grant: R1 290 (increased by R40 from R1 250 in April 2026).
- Care Dependency Grant: R2 400 (increased by R80 from R2 320 in April 2026).
Eligibility basics
To qualify for the Child Support Grant, a caregiver must meet the income limits: no more than R5 100 per month (R61 200 per year) for a single caregiver. The income threshold for married couples or partners doubles to R10 200 per month (R122 400 per year). The Foster Child Grant is for court-appointed foster homes. The Care Dependency Grant is for children under 18 with mental and/or physical disability; medical status must be determined by a state-appointed doctor, and it pays at the same rate as the adult SASSA Disability grant.
How to apply and what to bring
SASSA requires the following documents at appointments:
- Valid identity documents and birth certificates for applicant, child and spouse (if married).
- Proof of marital status (marriage, birth or death certificate of spouse).
- Proof of income for applicant and spouse.
- Certified three-month bank statement not older than three months.
- Proof of address (utility statement in your name not older than three months).
Checking payments and getting help
The 2026/27 schedule locks in the grant increases for the rest of the year. Beneficiaries can use the SASSA Service portal for certification and online services. For enquiries or problems, SASSA contact channels listed by the agency are:
- Toll-free call: 0800 60 10 11
- Head Office: 012 400 2322
- Email: [email protected]
Note: The Presidency has placed the department under interim leadership while a permanent appointment is sought; this temporary arrangement is intended to maintain operational continuity.
