SAPS sends specialised national teams after Cleveland mass shooting

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has reinforced its probe into the mass shooting in Cleveland, Johannesburg, by deploying additional national specialised resources to assist provincial investigators after the attack that left 12 people dead.

National teams sent to support provincial effort

Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane praised the rapid response of the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner and operational teams following the incident. To strengthen the investigation, Dimpane directed the deployment of extra national capabilities to support provincial investigators.

Which units were deployed

The reinforcements include members of Forensic Services, Tactical Response Teams and other specialised investigative units. A multidisciplinary task team made up of provincial and national experts has been established to pursue investigative and intelligence leads around the clock.

Investigation focus and appeals

Police are concentrating efforts on tracing a white Toyota Quantum allegedly linked to the shooting. Investigations are continuing.

“We have reinforced provincial efforts with additional national specialised resources to ensure that the investigation is expedited and that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice,” said Dimpane.

The Acting National Commissioner conveyed her condolences to the families of those killed and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
