Ahmed al Ahmed, the Sydney man celebrated for disarming a gunman during the Bondi Beach mass shooting, has pleaded not guilty to charges related to an alleged assault on his father, court documents show.

Who is Ahmed al Ahmed

Ahmed al Ahmed, described in reports as a fruit seller, became widely known after video footage showed him intervening during the December 14 attack at a Jewish festival on Bondi Beach that killed 15 people. During the attack he reportedly ducked between parked cars, grabbed one of the attackers and wrested away a weapon. He sustained gunshot wounds during the incident and later met Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. A fundraiser for him raised over $1 million, according to the reports.

Court appearance and charges

Ahmed faced court on Wednesday in the Sydney suburb of Bankstown, where he denied charges of common assault and domestic stalking or intimidation, court documents provided to AFP show. The next court hearing is scheduled for August 12.

Family and legal statements

His lawyer, Mohamad Sakr, spoke to journalists outside court and urged that the presumption of innocence be respected. He described the situation as difficult for Ahmed and called for his honesty and dignity to be maintained while the matters are determined.

“There is one thing that must be upheld and that is the presumption of innocence. He is a heroic man and his honesty and dignity should be maintained until these matters are determined.”

Local media also reported that last month two of Ahmed’s brothers faced court over allegations they had attempted to pressure him to hand over some of the fundraiser money.

Investigation and next steps

The matter will return to court on August 12 for the next hearing, according to the court documents reported to AFP.
