Eastern Cape N2 crash death toll rises to six after fatal head-on collision

A tragic crash on the N2 in the Eastern Cape has claimed another life, pushing the number of fatalities to six after a critically injured woman died in hospital.

The head-on collision happened on Tuesday morning near Mooiplaas, outside KuGompo, leaving emergency responders with a devastating scene as they worked to rescue survivors and recover those who lost their lives.

Another life lost after hospital admission

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport confirmed that the woman, who had initially survived the collision and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, later succumbed to her injuries.

Her death brings the total number of people killed in the crash to six, adding to the heartbreak already felt by the victims’ families and communities.

In a statement, the department expressed its condolences to everyone affected, acknowledging the pain facing the families, friends and loved ones of those who died.

Weather conditions raise fresh road safety concerns

While investigators continue working to establish what caused the collision, transport officials have again highlighted the dangerous driving conditions currently affecting large parts of the province.

Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose urged motorists to remain alert, warning that persistent heavy rainfall and patches of dense mist are making travel more hazardous than usual.

The latest warning comes as winter weather continues to affect visibility across several Eastern Cape routes, increasing the importance of reducing speed, maintaining safe following distances and driving cautiously.

Traffic resumes after emergency response

Authorities have since reopened the affected section of the N2 after emergency services completed much of their rescue and recovery work.
