Mogotsi fails to unmask state witnesses as court pushes case to August 30

Self‑proclaimed political fixer Brown Mogotsi failed to force prosecutors to reveal the identities of state witnesses after the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court ruled that their details should remain confidential over safety concerns, according to IOL (Independent Online).

Postponed date and defence access denied

According to IOL, the Johannesburg magistrate’s court has postponed the criminal case against Brown Mogotsi to August 30. The defence had applied for the names and addresses of witnesses expected to testify, but the court dismissed that application and allowed prosecutors to withhold the witness list.

Charges and courtroom arguments

IOL reports Mogotsi faces multiple Schedule 5 charges, including perjury, defeating the ends of justice, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging a firearm in a public place and attempting to bribe the investigating officer. The matter relates to allegations that he staged an assassination attempt on himself in Vosloorus in 2025.

The state told the court that revealing witness identities could compromise their safety and said that one witness had previously been approached by people allegedly linked to Mogotsi after personal details were disclosed during earlier bail proceedings, IOL reports.

“If for the purpose of preparing for his trial, he wants to do further investigations and prepare adequately for his trial,” defence attorney Makau William Sekgatja said in court, according to IOL.

State Advocate Thami Mpekana told the court the prosecution is trial‑ready but wants witness identities protected “in the interests of justice,” IOL reports.

Ballistics and outstanding evidence

IOL says investigators have alleged that ballistic evidence links the firearm used in the alleged staged shooting to other serious crimes, including murder. The firearm has not yet been recovered, according to IOL.

Next steps

According to IOL, prosecutors are moving closer to trial and Mogotsi is expected back in court as the matter progresses.
