Four arrested after R3 million jewellery heist in Jeffrey’s Bay

Police in the Eastern Cape arrested four suspects hours after an armed robbery at a jewellery store in Jeffrey’s Bay that saw jewels valued at more than R3 million taken, authorities said.

What happened at the store

According to the provincial police spokesperson, Captain Marius McCarthy, the incident occurred on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at approximately 10.15 am. McCarthy said employees and witnesses were inside the business assisting customers when two armed suspects entered, drew firearms, threatened the occupants and ordered everyone to lie on the floor.

Shortly after, more suspects entered the premises and began smashing the glass display cabinets. McCarthy said the suspects “looted jewellery with an estimated value of R3 million.” He added that no shots were fired and no injuries were reported.

Rapid police response and arrest

McCarthy described an immediate activation of first responders and a review of closed-circuit television footage, after which vehicle descriptions were circulated via local security networks and the NAVIC tracking system. Information was operationalised by members attached to the Gqeberha Flying Squad, who spotted a vehicle matching the description travelling at speed towards Gqeberha from Jeffrey’s Bay.

Flying Squad members intercepted the vehicle along the N2 Highway. A tactical search of the vehicle resulted in the arrest of four suspects aged between 24 and 36, McCarthy said.

Items recovered and charges

Police confiscated a large quantity of jewellery still bearing tags belonging to the jewellery store, one round of AK-47 ammunition, and clothing matching the description of what the suspects had been wearing during the robbery, McCarthy said. The suspects face charges of possession of suspected stolen property and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Sarah Baartman District Commissioner Major General Thandiswa Kupiso said, praising the response. Kupiso said the seamless integration of technology, real-time intelligence sharing with security partners and the tactical precision of the Flying Squad ensured the suspects were stopped before they could evade justice.

She added:

“We sent a clear warning to criminal syndicates that our highways and communities are heavily policed. The recovery of this multi-million rand property and the removal of illegal ammunition from our streets is a significant victory in our ongoing war against aggravated robberies.”
