Meeting at a restaurant ends in arrest
The Western Cape Hawks said the incident began when an admin manager at the Shoprite Group attended a meeting at a restaurant with the suspect. During the meeting, the suspect “performed acts of corruption by handing a plastic bag to the Shoprite admin manager, which contained several vaping devices together with something valuable, according to the suspect,” Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi, the Hawks’ Western Cape spokesperson, said.
Envelope found to contain cash
Investigators later discovered that the “something valuable” was a white envelope containing cash. “It was later discovered that this something valuable was a white envelope containing cash to the amount of R5,000 and an extra R5,100 as a gratification to ensure that his company retains the contract at Shoprite,” Vukubi said.
Immediate police action and court date
The Hawks were alerted and arrested the suspect on Monday. “He is expected to appear in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court on August 19, 2026,” Vukubi said.
