A multidisciplinary police task force rescued a Johannesburg businessman and arrested four men after arranging a ransom drop-off, police said.

Kidnapping and ransom demand

Police said the victim was allegedly kidnapped at his business premises in Cleveland on 15 August 2026. According to the police, several transactions were reportedly made on the victim’s bank account and a ransom demand was issued for his release.

Sting operation and arrests

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said a drop-off was arranged in exchange for the release of the victim, and officers moved in when the exchange took place. Four men were arrested and authorities seized two vehicles and four cellphones believed to have been used in the commission of the crime.

Victim found unharmed, investigation continues

Nevhuhulwi said the victim was rescued unharmed. She added there is possible linkage to other crimes as police investigations continue.

“A drop-off was arranged in exchange for the release of the victim, and that is when the police pounced on the suspects. Four men were arrested, and two vehicles and four cellphones believed to have been used in the commission of this crime were seized.”

Next court appearance

The police said the suspects are expected to appear before Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 19 August 2026.

Police described the arrest as the result of a coordinated, multidisciplinary effort and said investigations remain ongoing.
