JMPD arrests suspect and seizes illegal firearms after Westbury mass shooting tip‑off
JMPD Tactical Response Unit arrested a suspect in Lenasia South linked to a Westbury mass shooting and seized illegal firearms, including a submachine gun.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s Tactical Response Unit (TRU) arrested a suspect in Lenasia South after receiving a tip linking him to a deadly Westbury shooting, and officers seized illegal firearms, including a submachine gun, during the operation.
Tip‑off led to arrest
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said TRU officers received credible information about a suspect connected to recent gang violence while they were conducting high‑visibility patrols.
“Acting swiftly on the tip‑off, officers proceeded to Lenasia South Extension 4. Upon arrival, officers apprehended the suspect, who was found in possession of an illegal revolver with its serial number filed off,” Fihla said.
Further weapons seized
During preliminary questioning, the suspect led officers to a second location on the same street, where a Tommy Gun (submachine gun) and live ammunition were pointed out and seized, Fihla said.
“The suspect was immediately placed under arrest and detained at the Lenasia South South African Police Service (SAPS) station. He faces charges related to the possession of unlicensed firearms and prohibited weapons, with further investigation underway regarding his involvement in the deadly Westbury shootings,” Fihla added.
Incident background and response
The seizures and arrest followed a shooting incident in Westbury over the past weekend during which four people were gunned down, the JMPD said.
The JMPD commended TRU officers for their “vigilance, swift execution, and composure under pressure,” crediting their actions with removing dangerous, illegal weaponry from the streets and bringing a key suspect into custody.
Partnership with private security
Fihla said the JMPD “extends its sincere appreciation to Tracksecure Security Company for their valuable assistance during the operation,” and described the collaboration as underscoring the strength of joint efforts between public law enforcement and private security partners.
JMPD stance
Fihla said the JMPD remains committed to “restoring law and order, dismantling gang networks, and ensuring the safety of all Johannesburg communities,” and that the department has vowed to intensify its crackdown on gangs and illegal firearms.
