Eyewitness describes ‘fair‑skinned, bald’ gunman in Govender brothers’ murder trial
An eyewitness told the Durban High Court they saw a fair‑skinned, bald man with a firearm near a white bakkie during the fatal December 29, 2024 shooting of Shailen Singh.
Durban High Court A key eyewitness in the murder trial of Darren and Ferrel Govender told the Durban High Court they saw a fair‑skinned, bald man armed with a firearm near a white bakkie as gunfire rang out in Meridian Park.
What the witness said
The unidentified witness, whose identity is protected by court order, described hearing a gunshot while at Meridian Park and turning to see a bald man speaking to another man dressed in black. The witness said the bald man moved behind the passenger side of a vehicle before further shots were fired.
The witness gave a brief account of the occupants leaving the scene:
“The fair man got into the BMW and the other man got into a Ford Ranger and drove off,” the witness said.
Defence challenges and blood on victim
Advocate Mike Hellens SC, acting for Ferrel Govender, challenged the credibility of the witness and highlighted inconsistencies, including a difficulty the witness had in positively identifying the accused during an identification parade.
Under scrutiny over earlier statements, the witness accepted they might have chosen words imprecisely but maintained that Shailen Singh had visible blood on his chest and clothing after the shooting, responding to defence questioning about claims that Singh was “covered in blood.”
State’s allegations and next steps
According to the State’s narrative presented in court, Ferrel Govender is alleged to have been the shooter, while Darren Govender is alleged to have driven the getaway vehicle, identified as a Black Ford Ranger. The State linked the alleged attack to an affair involving Singh and Ferrel Govender’s girlfriend.
The trial is scheduled to resume on 17 May 2027, when a new eyewitness is expected to take the stand.
