Deputy President Paul Mashatile says his recovery is progressing well after a minor medical procedure, and that he is regaining strength each day. The update, provided on Tuesday, says Mashatile will continue to rest on his doctors’ advice while his office and colleagues manage ongoing responsibilities.

Stepping back while recuperating

The statement follows a recent minor procedure after which Mashatile temporarily stepped back from his normal duties. His acting spokesperson, Keith Khoza, said at the time that Mashatile remained in contact with his office and that his programme and official responsibilities continued to be managed during his recovery.

Following medical advice

Mashatile said his doctors had advised him to keep resting. He told the public:

“On the advice of my doctors, I will continue resting until advised otherwise while work and delegated responsibilities continue to be underway in the capable team in my office with other stakeholders in government, business and other sectors,”

Gratitude and commitment

He thanked his family, the medical team caring for him, members of his office, colleagues in government and the ANC, as well as President Cyril Ramaphosa and South Africans who sent messages of support.

“Your prayers and encouragement have been a source of strength,”

Mashatile said.

Despite continuing his recovery, Mashatile said he remained committed to his responsibilities and intended to return to his duties once he was able to do so. He added:

“Let us continue working together for the progress of our country. I assure you that I remain dedicated to the responsibilities entrusted to me, and I look forward to returning to my duties in full, serving our nation with renewed energy and commitment,”

he said.

What this means for his office

According to the statement, while Mashatile rests his office and delegated teams will continue to manage his programme and official responsibilities.
