Gauteng forecast: warm, clear Saturday then showers and cooler Sunday

Gauteng residents should expect a sharp shift in conditions this first October weekend. The South African Weather Service (Saws) forecasts a dry, mostly clear and warm Saturday before cooler, unsettled weather with showers arrives on Sunday.

Saturday: dry and warm

Saws says both Johannesburg and Pretoria will be dry on Saturday, with maximum temperatures reaching 24°C in each city. Pretoria is forecast to have mostly clear skies and temperatures from a minimum of 11°C to a maximum of 24°C, with a 0% chance of rain. Temperatures are expected to be about 16°C by 8am before rising into the afternoon.

Johannesburg is also expected to be mostly clear, with a temperature range of 9°C to 24°C and a 0% chance of rain.

Sunday: showers and cooler air

The forecast changes on Sunday as showers move into the province. Pretoria is expected to record a minimum of 13°C and a maximum of 22°C, with about 5mm of rain forecast and a 30% chance of rainfall. Showers may occur in the early hours followed by cloudy conditions in the afternoon.

Johannesburg is expected to be cooler on Sunday, with temperatures ranging from 12°C to 19°C. The city has a 30% chance of rain, with about 5mm expected. Saws forecasts rain showers in the early hours and showers and thundershowers during the afternoon.

Winds in both cities are expected to strengthen on Sunday, reaching about 18.52km/h.

Weekend outlook

The South African Weather Service highlights a marked transition between Saturday and Sunday: dry, mostly clear conditions will give way to showers and cooler temperatures. Pretoria is forecast to remain warmer than Johannesburg on Sunday, with a high of 22°C versus 19°C in Johannesburg.
