A cancer diagnosis can change almost every part of a person’s life, from their daily routine to their relationships and emotional wellbeing. For families and caregivers, the journey can bring its own fears and uncertainties.

Now, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) is creating a space where people affected by cancer can find support, share their experiences and connect with others who understand what they are going through.

The organisation will launch a free online mental health support group on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, at 19:00, giving cancer patients, family members and caregivers an opportunity to talk openly about the emotional challenges that often accompany a diagnosis.

A space for patients and families to feel understood

While cancer treatment often focuses on physical health, the emotional impact can be just as difficult to navigate.

Fear, anxiety, sadness and uncertainty may affect patients throughout their treatment journey. Loved ones can also struggle as they try to provide care while managing their own emotions.

SADAG’s new support group aims to make those experiences easier to navigate by bringing together people who understand the challenges involved.

Jonomine, who will lead the group, says participants will be welcome to share as much or as little as they feel comfortable with.

The intention is to create a supportive environment where people can ask questions, listen to others or simply be present without feeling pressured to discuss personal experiences.

Every cancer journey is different, and the group recognises that people need different kinds of support at different stages.

Caregivers need support, too

Cancer affects more than the person receiving treatment. Partners, relatives and caregivers often carry the responsibility of supporting a loved one while dealing with uncertainty themselves.

General practitioner Dr Louisa Albertyn says connecting with people who have experienced similar circumstances can provide comfort and reassurance.

Speaking to cancer survivors may help patients feel less isolated, while partners and caregivers can benefit from conversations with others who understand the demands of supporting someone through the illness.

Having a space to share these experiences can help families recognise that they do not have to manage every challenge on their own.

Free online sessions make support more accessible

One of the key features of the initiative is that it will take place online, allowing people from across South Africa to participate without travelling to a physical venue.

For patients balancing medical appointments and treatment, as well as relatives managing work and caregiving responsibilities, this could make accessing emotional support more convenient.

The group will meet on the last Wednesday of every month, following its launch on 28 October.

Participants will have the opportunity to exchange experiences, explore coping strategies and build connections with others who understand the emotional realities of cancer.
