Severe Sentencing for Years of Abuse

A Free State man has received one of the province’s harshest sentences, after being found guilty of sexually abusing, trafficking, and exploiting children over nearly a decade. The 37-year-old pleaded guilty to 119 charges, resulting in a sentence of three life terms and an additional 653 years in prison.

The Welkom Regional Court, operating as a dedicated Sexual Offences Court, handed down the sentence on Monday. The crimes spanned from 2015 to 2024 and involved three minor victims.

Targeted Grooming and Exploitation

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thabo Covane, the individual targeted his victims by exploiting positions of trust. Over several years, he engaged in grooming, sexual assault, rape, and sexual exploitation.

Investigations revealed that his first victim was subjected to abuse between 2015 and 2020, during which she was aged between 12 and 17. Later, between 2022 and 2024, the man groomed and abused a second child, aged between 11 and 14. During this time, he not only sexually exploited his victims but also produced and distributed child sexual abuse material, selling it to a pornographic website.

Complex Investigation Uncovers More Victims

The investigation, led by Warrant Officer Jessica Saayman of the Welkom Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, uncovered further acts of violence and exploitation. When authorities began closing in, the man kidnapped the second victima child he had groomedand trafficked her before attempting to kill both the child and himself. He also made efforts to destroy electronic devices and erase evidence to obstruct justice.

Further findings showed that the second victim was manipulated to produce child sexual abuse material involving a third minor, without that child’s knowledge.

Extensive List of Offences

The man pleaded guilty to a range of serious offences:

  • Rape of a minor
  • Sexual grooming
  • Sexual assault
  • Child trafficking
  • Kidnapping
  • Attempted murder
  • Sexual exploitation
  • Creation and distribution of child sexual abuse material
  • Defeating the administration of justice

Each charge represents a grave violation of children’s rights and the trust placed in adults by society and the community.

Breakdown of the Sentencing

The Welkom Regional Court imposed three life sentences for rape and human trafficking. Additional penalties included:

  • Five years each for sexual grooming, sexual assault, exposure to pornography, and the creation or possession of child sexual abuse material
  • Ten years for sexual exploitation and for distributing child sexual abuse material
  • Fifteen years for attempted murder
  • Five years for kidnapping
  • Three years for defeating the administration of justice

These additional terms bring the total sentence for all offences to 653 years, ordered to run concurrently with the life sentences.

Further Restrictions and Safeguards

In addition to the lengthy sentence, the court ordered several protective measures. The man’s particulars will be recorded in the National Register for Sex Offenders. He is barred from working with children, unfit to possess a firearm, and prohibited from using or possessing any electronic device for the duration of his incarceration.

Protecting Children and Upholding Justice

This case highlights the devastating impact of child trafficking, exploitation, and sexual abuse on young victims and their families. It demonstrates the critical role of specialized police units and courts in investigating and prosecuting such cases. Through a combination of lengthy imprisonment and preventative measures, the justice system aims not only to punish but also to safeguard against further harm.

The sentencing marks a substantial commitment to child protection and the pursuit of justice for the most vulnerable members of society.
