‘The struggle continues’: Mokonyane hits back at ANC decline talk
ANC NEC member Nomvula Mokonyane has called on every mayor and councillor to review their Integrated Development Plans (IDPs) within 100 days of taking office, so the plans deliver against the party’s six budget pillars from year one, not just at the cycle’s end, Joburg Etc reports.
Mokonyane: ANC wants 100-day IDP review in every municipality, stays coy on coalition talks
Speaking at a media briefing in Midrand on the ANC’s local government election performance, Mokonyane said municipalities now have a functional IDP framework aligned to those pillars, central to fixing local government and basic services.
Coalitions: too early to name partners
Mokonyane acknowledged the ANC’s reduced vote share likely means more coalitions than before, but said it was too early to name partners. The party remains open to any party or independent, citing KwaZulu-Natal’s past coalition with three MECs as a model. Any deal must deliver stability and align with ANC pillars. The MK Party is among those open to engagement, she said, though no formal talks have begun.
No blanket discipline purge
Mokonyane said the National Working Committee has resolved against new disciplinary processes over disputed candidate lists, regardless of seniority. A forensic process already under way will hear the disputes, with action only where political intervention fails.
Rejects ‘decline’ comparisons
Rejecting comparisons to declining liberation movements abroad, including Brazil and Nicaragua, Mokonyane pointed to the party’s renewal drive as evidence of change under way. ‘The struggle continues,’ she said, calling renewal ongoing, not time-bound.
Campaign lessons and results
She cited delayed candidate lists, which cut canvassing time, and conferences clashing with the election timeline, as lessons learned. Results beat the party’s 2024 form, she said, citing reversed MK gains in Soweto, and named candidate selection, political education and disciplined party agents as renewal markers. She dismissed as baseless a claim of a job swap discussed with the DA.
