Twice-yearly injection added to prevention options
Lenacapavir is a long-acting injectable given twice a year and is being introduced as an alternative to existing HIV prevention methods. The Presidency described the rollout as a major milestone in South Africa’s fight against HIV/AIDS and its efforts to reduce new infections.

The launch was attended by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu, provincial health MECs and representatives from civil society under the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC). Development partners and donors, including the Global Fund, were also expected to attend.
Government framing
“This groundbreaking initiative marks a significant milestone in South Africa’s ongoing efforts to fight against HIV/AIDS and aims to enhance prevention of new HIV infections,” the Presidency said.
Collaboration highlighted
Officials said the initiative reflects strengthened collaboration between government, civil society, the private sector and international partners in the drive to end HIV as a public health threat in South Africa.
