Wadeville taxi owner gunned down near site of husband’s 2018 murder

A woman taxi owner was gunned down near the same intersection in Wadeville, Ekurhuleni, where her husband was murdered seven years ago. The brutal killing has left her family terrified and uncertain about how to move forward.
Thandazile Zulu was shot dead near the R554 and Osborne Road while reportedly on her way to a stokvel meeting. Her relatives believe she was followed from her home and ambushed by gunmen. Her body was only discovered in nearby bushes hours after the shooting.
Zulu’s husband, Richard Nkosi, was also shot and killed in 2018 near the same area. He had previously raised concerns about conflict over taxi routes in Zonkizizwe.
According to a family member, Zulu was found in her bullet-riddled car, which appeared to have veered off the road during the attack. “They wanted to make sure she was dead,” said the relative, who asked not to be named. “She was the only one left in charge of the taxis. Now the children are orphans.”
The relative added that Nkosi’s murder case has never been resolved and that the family still hasn’t found closure. “We don’t know who to trust. Our family is shattered.”
The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) condemned the killing, calling it a disturbing sign of escalating violence in the taxi industry. Spokesperson Rebecca Phala said, “When killers begin targeting women, mothers, widows and caregivers, it shows a new low in this senseless violence. This is not just an attack on individuals, it is an attack on families and the very fabric of our communities.”
