PKTT arrests suspects in separate killings of ANC councillor Thabang Masemola and EFF member Aaron Makola

Gauteng’s Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) has arrested suspects believed to be linked to two politically motivated murders the killing of ANC ward councillor Thabang Masemola and the murder of EFF member Aaron Makola. Police said the arrests were made in two separate operations and will lead to court appearances as investigations continue.

Arrests linked to Masemola killing

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the PKTT arrested two suspects in connection with the assassination of Masemola. The councillor, who served Ward 10 in Tshwane, was assassinated in Mamelodi East on 8 July 2025.

One of the suspects is named as Vusimuzi Champ Gebuza, 41, described in police statements as an alleged hitman. Mathe said a woman was also arrested and is accused of assisting in the planning of the killing. Mathe added that Gebuza is expected to be linked to two additional cases of murder and attempted murder dating back to 2023 and 2024. Both suspects will reappear in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court as investigators pursue further charges.

Separate operation finds suspects in Makola case

In a different operation, the PKTT located suspects related to the death of Aaron Makola. Mathe said three men, aged 40, 42 and 44, were arrested over the weekend and are set to appear before the Delmas Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 5 August 2026. They face charges of murder, kidnapping and robbery.

Police reaction and broader message

Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, commended the PKTT for its work. Police framed the arrests as part of efforts to dismantle hit squads and restore confidence in law enforcement.

“We commend the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team for their tireless efforts and assure the families of the victims, as well as the people of Gauteng, that we remain resolute in our fight against violent crime and politically motivated killings.”

Brigadier Mathe told reporters the arrests mark a “turning point” in Gauteng’s struggle against political violence and send a clear message that “Saps will pursue perpetrators relentlessly and ensure justice for victims of targeted killings.”

Investigations will continue and the arrested suspects are due to appear in the relevant magistrate’s courts as police pursue additional charges and further case developments.
