Johannesburg Allocates Millions to Restore Art Gallery and Modernize City Library

The City of Johannesburg is investing heavily in its cultural and educational infrastructure, with Mayor Dada Morero announcing a R50 million commitment toward restoring the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) archives. Additionally, the city has allocated R60 million to refurbish the Johannesburg City Library, which will partially reopen in February 2025, with a fully operational launch expected by June.
Restoring a Cultural Icon: Johannesburg Art Gallery
Built over 100 years ago, the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) is one of the city’s most iconic cultural landmarks, housing a vast collection of over 10,000 artworks. These include invaluable historical pieces, Southern African cultural collections, and a growing contemporary art portfolio. However, in recent years, the gallery has faced significant challenges in maintaining its collections and facilities.
Mayor Dada Morero emphasized the importance of preserving JAG’s heritage during a media briefing, stating, “Investing in our cultural institutions not only preserves our history but also inspires future generations through art and culture.”
The R50 million injection into the gallery will address critical restoration needs, ensuring the preservation of its archives and enhancing its role as a cornerstone of Johannesburg’s cultural identity.
In parallel, the City Library is undergoing a significant transformation to meet modern standards. Closed for renovations in recent years, the library will reopen in two phases. The children’s section is set to welcome visitors in February, while the adult section will be fully operational by June 2025.
Mayor Morero noted that R60 million has already been spent to ensure the library meets compliance with current infrastructure standards. He highlighted the challenges of updating older buildings to align with modern safety and operational requirements, saying, “Buildings constructed decades ago need substantial reconfiguration to meet today’s standards. We’ve invested in tankers and other resources to address these heritage-handling issues.”
Embracing Technology for Hybrid Learning Spaces
As part of the library’s upgrades, the city is introducing advanced digital technologies to create hybrid spaces for learning and engagement. Director of Library and Information Services (LIS), Nobuntu Mpendulo, explained, “We’ve transformed libraries into multi-purpose spaces that include digital technology, food outlets, and resources for both younger and older generations.”
Through partnerships with tech giants like Google and Microsoft, the library will provide residents with access to coding classes, virtual learning platforms, and other digital resources, bridging the gap in literacy and digital skills.
Mayor Morero emphasized the importance of these collaborations, saying, “Libraries today must connect residents to digital technology, not just books. By partnering with institutions of higher learning and tech companies, we’re ensuring that our libraries are relevant and accessible in the digital age.”
The restoration of the Johannesburg Art Gallery and the modernization of the City Library reflect a broader vision for the city’s future. These initiatives aim to preserve Johannesburg’s cultural heritage while equipping residents with the tools and skills needed for a digital-driven world.
As Johannesburg continues to grow, these projects symbolize its commitment to fostering education, cultural appreciation, and technological advancement, making the city a hub of opportunity and innovation.
