KZN Education Department Probes Death of Five-Year-Old Pupil Hit by Car

The KwaZulu-Natal education department has launched an investigation into the tragic death of a five-year-old pupil who was struck by a vehicle outside Orissa Primary School in Isipingo.
Department spokesperson Mlu Mtshali confirmed that two teachers transported the injured child to the hospital in a private vehicle. However, paramedics later declared the pupil dead.
Following the incident, the school immediately contacted the child’s parents, ambulance services, and the police.
Mtshali expressed concern over allegations that the school was being blamed for the accident.
“We are disturbed by these claims and assure the public that the department is investigating the matter,” he said.
He also raised alarm over reports that the principal and other staff members faced threats when they went to offer condolences to the grieving family.
“The department condemns any form of violence or intimidation against educators who are dedicated professionals committed to providing quality education. We will work closely with law enforcement to ensure educators are protected and that those responsible for threats are held accountable,” Mtshali added.
Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka urged the public to allow the investigation to run its course and to respect the privacy of the bereaved family.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends. Losing a child is a devastating blow, and we acknowledge the immense pain and grief they are experiencing,” Mtshali said.
The department has not yet disclosed further details about the circumstances leading to the accident.
