KZN on High Alert: Cogta Warns Residents as Severe Thunderstorms and Flooding Lash the Province

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has issued a stern warning to residents as severe weather conditions continue to batter the province. The South African Weather Service (Saws) has escalated its alert, issuing a level five weather warning for severe thunderstorms in several municipalities, including uMdoni, eThekwini, uMkhambathini, Ray Nkonyeni, and uMzumbe. A level four warning is also in effect for parts of uThukela, Harry Gwala, Ugu, uMzinyathi, Amajuba, and uMgungundlovu.
The department has expressed deep concern over the potential impact of the heavy rainfall, which is expected to cause widespread flooding, particularly in areas where the ground is already saturated. Initial reports indicate that road infrastructure in eThekwini Metro is already compromised, with several key routes experiencing severe flooding.
Affected Areas and Precautions
Cogta has urged residents in low-lying areas and those living near riverbanks to seek shelter on higher ground. The department has also advised against non-essential travel and encouraged people to remain indoors where possible.
“We are deeply concerned about the potential impact of these severe thunderstorms and associated flooding. The province has already experienced tragic losses of life due to recent inclement weather,” Cogta stated.
Road Closures in eThekwini
The heavy rainfall has led to significant disruptions in eThekwini, with several roads rendered impassable. Cogta has provided a list of affected routes, including:
- M4 nearing Wentworth turn off
- Montpelier Road
- Joyce and Donkin Road corner
- Umgeni Road
- Quarry Road east
- M4 Riverside offramp
Residents are advised to avoid these areas and use alternative routes where possible.
Ongoing Monitoring and Updates
Cogta has assured residents that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide regular updates. Emergency services are on high alert, and residents are urged to remain vigilant and cooperate fully with authorities.
