SASSA Beneficiaries Urged to Switch to Postbank Black Card Before March 2025 Deadline

Minister of Social Development Nokuzola Tolashe has once again called on South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries to replace their gold cards with the new Postbank black card or switch to a bank of their choice before the looming deadline.

The initial cut-off date of February 28, 2025, was extended to March 20 after many beneficiaries faced difficulties making the transition. Concerns were raised about possible payment disruptions, prompting the government to grant additional time for the switch.

Tolashe had previously criticised Postbank’s initial deadline, saying it lacked proper planning. She described the slow adoption of the new black cards as a crisis, particularly after reports of elderly beneficiaries enduring long queues to receive their new cards.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining an efficient social security system, Tolashe said officials are working tirelessly to resolve the ongoing issues.

“We want to assure beneficiaries that ensuring a smooth and efficient social grant system remains a priority. We are doing everything possible to address concerns and difficulties,” she said.

She also stressed the urgency of replacing the gold cards before they become invalid.

“With the gold cards set to expire in March 2025, we urge all beneficiaries to take action now by switching to the Postbank black card or moving to a bank of their choice. Our goal is to assist everyone quickly, efficiently, and with dignity,” Tolashe added.

To further protect beneficiaries, the minister highlighted efforts to enhance SASSA’s security systems to prevent fraud and safeguard personal information.

“We are closely monitoring and strengthening our systems to ensure that your personal information remains protected at all times,” she assured.
