The South African Police Service (SAPS) has dismissed allegations of mistreatment against miners rescued last week in Stilfontein, North West. The claims surfaced after the death of Koali Rankomo, one of the miners, at a local hospital earlier this week.

According to the Department of Health spokesperson, Tshegofatso Mothibedi, Rankomo was admitted to Klerksdorp/Tshepong Tertiary Hospital with gastroenteritis and dehydration. The department confirmed that 32 suspected illegal miners remain under medical care while in police custody.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe emphasized that the police are working closely with the Department of Health to guarantee proper medical attention for the miners.

“On a daily basis, SAPS members conduct inspections at police holding cells. Those requiring medical care are referred and admitted to local hospitals,” Mathe said.

She noted that the number of hospitalized miners has increased from nine on January 13 to 32 as of January 21.

Mathe rejected the allegations of inadequate care as “devoid of truth.” She assured that SAPS is committed to the well-being of those in custody, ensuring that miners receive proper treatment.

The police and health authorities continue to monitor the condition of the detained miners as investigations proceed.
