Preggy Padayachee, the uncle-in-law of fired Crime Intelligence deputy head Major-General Feroz Khan, was shot dead on the R21 in Ekurhuleni on Monday night, according to IOL.

What happened on the R21

Police say the incident occurred as the vehicle was travelling towards OR Tambo International Airport near Griffiths Road. A Fiat reportedly broke down on the highway and the driver called a friend for assistance. The friend arrived with two other people and while the group was attending to the vehicle, shots were fired.

The driver attempted to flee but lost control and crashed into a jersey barrier. He sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. One passenger sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to hospital for treatment, while the third occupant managed to escape unharmed, police said. Authorities are investigating the incident as murder and attempted murder. No arrests have been made.

Threats and possible motive

According to IOL, Padayachee had reportedly received death threats prior to the attack. A source told IOL the threats “may have been related to business”, but the motive for the shooting remains unknown.

Links to Feroz Khan and timing

According to IOL, Padayachee was closely associated with Feroz Khan and had previously acted as a spokesperson for Khan’s family during several high-profile developments. IOL reports he spoke publicly after Khan was shot in May and later responded to media reports following Khan’s arrest.

IOL also notes the killing came on the eve of Khan’s scheduled appearance before the Madlanga Commission, where Khan was due to testify in camera on Tuesday. Police have given no indication that Khan’s testimony is connected to Padayachee’s killing, according to IOL.

Investigation under way

Police are investigating the shooting. Details released by authorities include the vehicle breakdown, the arrival of three people to assist, the shooting, the crash into a jersey barrier and the subsequent medical treatment of a wounded passenger. No arrests have been reported.

According to IOL, inquiries into motive and responsibility are ongoing.
