Fikile Mbalula called for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to arrest Netanyahu. According to the ANC secretary-general, the court must take immediate action against the Israeli Prime Minister. EWN reports that Mbalula drew parallels with the ICC’s response to Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Ukraine invasion, stressing the need for consistent accountability. Speaking at Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg, where a large gathering expressed solidarity with Palestine, Mbalula noted that failing to issue an arrest warrant for Netanyahu would be letting him escape accountability for violating the human rights of Palestinians. He firmly stated, “Why are you leaving out a murderer like Netanyahu?”

In addition to his call for Netanyahu’s arrest, Mbalula reiterated the ANC’s stance on the closure of Israel’s embassy in Pretoria, declaring, “That embassy must be shut down – not yesterday, but today.” Despite these calls, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and The Presidency expressed reservations about severing diplomatic ties with Israel, highlighting the complexities involved in such a decision. The issue reflects a broader international debate on addressing human rights concerns while navigating diplomatic relations.
