Five foreign nationals remanded after R600m Limpopo meth lab bust

Five people arrested at a clandestine crystal methamphetamine laboratory on a Limpopo farm have been remanded in custody after a raid that seized drugs and equipment with an estimated street value of about R600 million.

Who was charged and when they appeared

The accused are two Mexican nationals, Verdogo Marioano Barrera (48) and Leon Castilo Juan (39), and three Zimbabwean nationals, Nyamukanga Tichaona Roy (23), Mabayi Lee (35) and Nyamukanga Tanaka Royce (20). They made a first brief appearance in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 August 2026.

They face charges including manufacturing a scheduled substance, dealing in drugs, possession of drugs, money laundering and contraventions of the Immigration Act. All five remain in custody and the investigation continues.

How the operation unfolded

Authorities say an intelligence-driven operation was conducted on 20 August 2026 at Plot 19, Kamkusi Campbell, in Musina. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), working with various South African Police Service units, carried out the raid.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mashudu Malabi said that during the operation a clandestine laboratory manufacturing crystal methamphetamine was uncovered. Malabi said drugs and laboratory equipment with an estimated street value of R600 million, together with an undisclosed amount of cash, were seized and that the drugs were allegedly destined for distribution. The five accused were arrested at the scene.

Scale and context

Hawks spokesperson Colonel Avele Fumba described the find as exposing an alleged sophisticated, industrial-scale operation established for the manufacture of dangerous illicit substances destined for distribution.

The Musina raid follows a similar large seizure in Swartruggens, North West, in May 2026, where 11 suspects were arrested in connection with a massive drug manufacturing facility.
