Ekurhuleni Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana says illegal mining is the cause of the Boksburg gas leak. Jacaranda FM reports that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said the incident had claimed the lives of at least 24 people, including three children.

Four individuals are in critical condition at the hospital, while 11 others are in serious but stable condition. Ngodwana, speaking to the SABC, confirmed that the gas leak was not an explosion but a result of a leakage caused by the operations of illegal miners known as “zama zamas.”
