KZN accused of ignoring ‘bogus doctor’ who worked in public hospitals

The VP Justice Foundation has accused KwaZulu-Natal health authorities of failing to act after a man allegedly falsified qualifications and worked as a medical professional at public hospitals. The foundation says fraud cases linked to the individual date back to 2017 and 2018, but no decisive action has been taken, and the man reportedly earned hundreds of thousands of rand while posing as a doctor.

Where the alleged fraud took place

According to the foundation, the man was first employed at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital without a medical qualification and later transferred to Pietermaritzburg Northdale Hospital. The foundation says he spent time acting as a medical professional for a post he was not qualified to hold.

Foundation raises concerns about delays

VP Justice Foundation spokesperson Visham Panday told The Citizen the case is among the most disturbing scandals in recent memory and that those responsible should be held accountable.

“This is fraud and medical negligence and if the state persists in delaying prosecution, then it is equally complicit to the crime,”

The foundation also said the man submitted fraudulent academic records linked to the University of KwaZulu-Natal to secure employment as a medical intern, and that his actions amounted to fraud. The foundation’s lawyers have written to the South African Police Service, the National Prosecuting Authority and other authorities, expressing concern that a long period had passed without charges.

Investigation status

KZN Hawks’ spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo said the matter is still under investigation.

What’s known and what isn’t

The Citizen’s reporting states the timeline of internal confirmation by the health department that the man submitted fraudulent records stretches back to 2018. Beyond the foundation’s allegations and the Hawks’ confirmation that an investigation is ongoing, no further actions or outcomes are recorded in the article.
