Man shaken after being mistaken for foreign national at taxi rank, says IOL

According to IOL, a South African man said he was left shaken after an encounter at a taxi rank in which other people questioned his nationality.

Routine outing turns into confrontation

According to IOL, in a video the man, who goes by Mngadi, said the incident happened while he was at the rank after a routine outing with his family. A woman approached him and began a conversation about an alleged incident involving six children who reportedly died in Soshanguve.

According to IOL, the conversation shifted when the woman made remarks suggesting he should leave, apparently because she believed he was a foreign national. Mngadi challenged the assumption and told her,

“I am a South African,”

Proof of citizenship and concern

According to IOL, Mngadi showed his identity document on video to prove his citizenship and said,

“This is my ID,”

and that the experience had left him unsettled:

“I’m very worried now,”

The man expressed concern about how quickly people are profiled based on their appearance or perceived origin.

Wider debate and warnings

According to IOL, the incident comes amid heightened public debate in South Africa around undocumented migration, public frustration and rising anti-migrant rhetoric in some communities.

According to IOL, labour federation leader Zwelinzima Vavi warned that violence on the streets and similar incidents reflect deeper failures in law enforcement and political accountability, saying:

“If we had a functioning criminal justice system, these individuals attacking people in the streets would have long been arrested and charged with public violence and inciting hatred.”

Official cautions

According to IOL, the South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal urged caution over the spread of inflammatory online content linked to public unrest and warned that such conduct may fall within the scope of the Cybercrimes Act.
