Minister, MEC condemn school violence after 16-year-old fatally stabbed in Dimbaza

A 16-year-old pupil, Siphosethu Jack, has died after being stabbed in a classroom at Kuyasa Senior Secondary School in Dimbaza. The National Department of Social Development said the incident occurred on Friday and that another pupil allegedly carried out the attack.

Leaders voice shock and call for safer schools

Social Development Minister Dina Pule and Eastern Cape MEC Bukiwe Fanta publicly condemned the violence following the fatality. Both officials expressed sadness and outrage at the death.

“This tragic incident underscores the pressing need for effective measures to ensure that our schools are safe environments, free from violence and fear,” said Pule.

Pule extended her condolences and said: “We stand united in condemning this senseless act of violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with Siphosethu’s family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Family had moved pupil seeking safety

The department said Siphosethu’s family had transferred him to Kuyasa Senior Secondary School in the hope of protecting him from violence. After the transfer, the family suffered the loss of their son and grandson, the department said.

Calls for community action

Fanta acknowledged the anxiety parents feel about their children’s safety at school and urged cooperation among schools, parents, community leaders and law enforcement.

“It is our collective responsibility to ensure that schools are sanctuaries for learning and growth, not places of violence and fear,” said Fanta.

Pule added that children should be able to focus on their education and future without fear of violence and called for collective efforts to prevent such incidents.

Investigation details limited

The department did not provide further details about the alleged attacker or indicate whether any arrests had been made.
