The MK party has rejected reports that it spent more than R336 000 on private security for its secretary-general, Sibonelo Nomvalo, calling the coverage “false, malicious and irresponsible.” According to The Citizen, the party lodged a formal denial and has instructed lawyers to demand a retraction and apology.

Invoice detailed weapons, protectors and vehicle

According to The Citizen, an invoice from Real Squad Security showed the party was billed R336 000 for security services for “SG” (secretary-general) in April 2026. The invoice, The Citizen reported, said the package included two protectors, a reliever, two rifles, two handguns and a vehicle.

Party response and threat of legal action

In a statement cited by The Citizen, MK party spokesperson Sifiso Mahlangu described the coverage as “riddled with innuendo and speculation” and said the allegations are denied “in the strongest possible terms.”

“The allegations contained in the article are denied in the strongest possible terms. They are devoid of factual foundation and are based on anonymous sources whose credibility cannot be tested.”

The Citizen reported Mahlangu as saying the party had asked lawyers to demand an immediate retraction and apology and warning:

“Should the publication fail to comply, the MK Party will not hesitate to institute appropriate legal proceedings against Sunday World, its publisher and the journalists responsible.”

Financial pressures within the party

The Citizen also reported internal communications that suggested the MK party is under financial strain. According to The Citizen, messages between party president Jacob Zuma and the new treasurer-general, Brian Molefe, described a “pitiful” financial predicament.

The Citizen said a June memo from treasurer-general Brian Molefe announced that all travel, accommodation, car hire and venue hire had been suspended until 26 July while the treasurer-general’s office focused on financial processes. The memo, The Citizen reported, also said monthly allowance payments for provincial election task teams would be delayed because of outstanding verification and administrative processes.
