Build One South Africa (BOSA) MP, deputy leader and co‑founder Nobuntu Hlazo‑Webster has been unveiled as the party’s mayoral candidate for the City of Johannesburg, with a six‑point programme and a pledge to begin substantive changes within her first 100 days in office, according to IOL.

Unveiling and leadership backing

The announcement took place at the Forum in Bryanston, where BOSA leader Dr Mmusi Maimane introduced Hlazo‑Webster as the party’s candidate for Johannesburg, IOL reports. The unveiling set out a vision that, the party says, moves beyond repairing existing problems toward building a more ambitious future for the city.

Six pillars of the campaign

According to IOL, Hlazo‑Webster’s campaign is organised around six core pillars:

  • Building a skills‑led city
  • Economic development through township entrepreneurship
  • An integrated, government‑led economy
  • A corruption‑free city
  • A much safer Johannesburg
  • Reviving the city as the logistical capital

100‑day plan and flagship initiatives

Hlazo‑Webster has signalled an intention to act quickly if elected, saying she aims to initiate significant changes within the first 100 days in office, according to IOL. One of her flagship proposals is the creation of a special business advisory council made up of leaders from business, finance, technology, logistics and entrepreneurship to advise the city and tackle barriers to investment, IOL reports.

Governance and coalitions

On municipal administration, Hlazo‑Webster told attendees she plans to consolidate governance across entities such as City Power, Joburg Water and the Johannesburg Roads Agency to end fragmentation and create a more accountable, efficient city administration, according to IOL.

She also stressed the need for a new approach to coalition government to prevent political infighting from undermining service delivery. In IOL’s reporting, she said:

“Having studied coalitions on the continent and other parts of the world, our challenge has been entering coalitions focused solely on bartering for positions, without having an agreed programme with clear deliverables,”

Vision for Johannesburg

Hlazo‑Webster framed her ambition for the city in expansive terms. “Joburg’s future cannot be defined solely by fixing what is broken. That is the minimum requirement of leadership. Our ambition must be greater,” she said, IOL reports. She added: “The question is not simply how we repair Johannesburg, but how we realise everything Johannesburg can become: a city of possibility,” according to IOL.

What this means for the campaign

By combining a short‑term action promise with structural governance proposals and an economic advisory mechanism, the BOSA campaign under Hlazo‑Webster sets out a clear set of priorities for Johannesburg ahead of the local government elections, IOL reports.
