The South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) expressed regret over Israel’s decision to recall Ambassador Eliav Belotserkovsky, calling it “a great pity.”

According to EWN, the move follows strong criticism from the South African government regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza and a recent démarche issued against Belotserkovsky.

Parliament is set to vote on an Economic Freedom Fighters motion to close the Israeli Embassy and sever diplomatic ties with Israel.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lior Haiat, stated that Ambassador Belotserkovsky was recalled to Jerusalem for consultations in response to recent South African statements.

SAJBD’s national chairperson, Karen Milner, highlighted the sustained campaign of hostility towards the Israeli ambassador, describing it as counterproductive to dialogue and engagement.

South Africa had previously recalled its diplomats based in Tel Aviv for consultation.

The SAJBD hopes for the return of both ambassadors to foster continued dialogue and engagement in the interest of peace.
