Sanral to close off N1 freeway over the weekend

Over the weekend, SANRAL will close the N1 freeway between Rigel Avenue and the R21 interchange to install four beams for a new bridge built over Solomon Mahlangu Drive. The closure is necessary for placing pre-cast concrete beams to double Solomon Mahlangu Drive in Erasmusrand, as Sanral northern region project manager Alan Agaienz stated.

The agency has advised motorists to use alternative routes during the road closure. On Saturday, the freeway will open two lanes. A brief opening of two lanes in the northbound direction will occur at 15:00 for 45 minutes. On Sunday, the northbound will be fully open until 20:00. The southbound will have two lanes available for 45 minutes. The southbound will close at 20:00 to remove the two cranes. The road closure is on Saturday from 5 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 7 am to 6 pm.

The project started in 2018, and SANRAl aimed to finish it by September 2022. But it experienced delays due to factors such as Covid-19. The provincial government estimates the project’s cost at R300-million.
