Take a Child to Theatre Month

Soweto Theatre is excited to present a four-day fantastic campaign from 20 to 24 March 2023 to celebrate ‘Take a Child to Theatre Month’. According to the City of Johannesburg, this collaborative campaign with the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People recognises the transformative role of the arts for children and young people, combating the poverty of imagination.

CEO of Joburg City Theatres, Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema, mentions: “With this campaign, we aim to encourage different thinking by discovering and figuring out how the story is told and what it means. Theatre requires a different kind of resourcefulness and flexibility, stretching the skills of imagination.”

The campaign will provide children and young people around Soweto with free access to a once-in-a-lifetime adventure packed with world-class shows, dance workshops, story-telling, book giveaways, a picnic and music performance by Youth Orchestra with Maharishi Institute Choir and Nothando Noter, a disability awareness play performed by students from the Johannesburg Society for the Blind, and a career day for learners from grades 11 and 12.

Matodzi Mashau, Soweto Theatre’s PR Officer, says the celebration will encourage communication, creativity, imagination, and culture. “Theatre is the single-most valuable place where kids can explore the endless possibilities of their imaginations and what they can do,” says Makhosazana Hlatshwayo, a youth and community developer at Soweto Theatre.

“Without this space, children not only miss an amazing artistic experience, but they lose the chance to experience an endless amount of learning opportunities,” she said.
