Woolworths deploys bomb‑sniffing dogs after two store explosions
Woolworths has stepped up security across South Africa by deploying specialist bomb‑sniffing dogs to stores nationwide after two improvised explosive devices detonated at its branches within 24 hours.
What happened
The first explosion occurred at Woolworths’ Menlyn Park branch in Pretoria during the early hours of 28 May. A second device detonated at the Preller Square store in Bloemfontein on 29 May.
Both incidents took place between 01:00 and 02:00 while the stores were closed to the public. No injuries were reported, though Woolworths said some employees were shaken and were receiving support from the company.
Security response and investigation
The South African Police Service (SAPS) responded to both incidents and conducted sweeps of the affected areas. The Hawks have been appointed to lead the investigation.
The retailer said authorities had not yet established a motive for the attacks and that no suspects had been identified.
“At this stage, no further information on the nature of the devices or the motive behind these attacks is available,” the retailer previously said.
Woolworths’ measures and business continuity
Woolworths shared images of the canine units conducting sweeps at stores across the country and thanked the teams on social media, posting:
“Hi Woolies shoppers, this weekend we had a few esteemed guests in attendance at stores across the country. A big thank you to all the selfless helpers who are working and sniffing hard to keep us all safe,”
and saying
“Targeted attacks will not deter us. We will keep showing up, keep opening our doors, for you, our customers.”
The Menlyn Park store has reopened. The Preller Square branch remains closed while forensic investigators continue their work. Woolworths has also brought in specialist forensic experts to support the investigations and strengthen security and intelligence capabilities.
Ongoing situation
The company said it will continue to operate while strengthening security measures across its national store network as authorities investigate the explosions.
