Despite anti-immigration protests, many Zimbabweans continue travelling to South Africa
Cross-border movement between Zimbabwe and South Africa continues despite rising anti-immigration tensions. According to The South African, growing anti-illegal immigration protests in parts of South Africa appear to be driving some Zimbabweans back home, but the flow of migrants into the country shows no signs of stopping.
More people leaving but arrivals still steady
Bus operators have reported an increase in the number of Zimbabweans travelling from South Africa to neighbouring countries. Some operators told The South African that departures have risen in recent weeks, with passengers carrying large household items and, in some cases, saying they do not plan to return.
At the same time, bus services running routes between Bulawayo and Johannesburg continue to operate normally. Operators said these services are still carrying passengers heading south for work, business, family visits and other opportunities, a pattern that suggests many Zimbabweans still view South Africa as an important destination.
Mixed decisions among travellers
Travellers interviewed by The South African expressed differing views on whether to stay in South Africa or return to Zimbabwe. Some are relocating permanently, while others say they plan to return after a break.
“I’m going back to South Africa because of my family. I got married to a South African woman and I cannot leave my family alone. I would rather wait for the right time and bring them to Zimbabwe,”
Raymond Masina, quoted by The South African.
“I came back from South Africa last month, the current situation is not user friendly,” “I lost my job and I could not pay my rent, so I decided to come back home. I hope I an start a new life here.”
Sipho Mnkandla, quoted by The South African.
What the movement shows
According to The South African, while some Zimbabweans are choosing to return home amid the tensions, many others continue to travel to South Africa as they have done for years. The continued movement of travellers suggests that, despite concerns over anti-illegal immigration protests, South Africa remains an important destination for many Zimbabweans.
