For Manchester United fans, Old Trafford is supposed to be a fortress. On Monday night, it felt anything but.
A chaotic second half, a controversial red card, and a clinical Leeds United side combined to hand United a frustrating 2-1 defeat that could have wider implications in the Premier League run-in.
At the centre of it all was a decision that left Michael Carrick visibly furious on the touchline.
The game turned shortly after the break when Lisandro Martinez was shown a straight red card following a VAR review. Referee Paul Tierney ruled that the Argentine defender had pulled the hair of Dominic Calvert-Lewin during an aerial duel, categorising it as violent conduct.
Carrick did not hold back in his assessment. The United boss insisted the contact was minimal and far from aggressive, describing the call as one of the worst decisions he has seen.
From a local fan perspective, it is the kind of call that would dominate post-match conversations in pubs from Manchester to Maboneng. VAR continues to split opinion globally, and this incident will only add fuel to the debate about consistency in officiating.
Carrick also pointed to an earlier moment that he felt shifted momentum. He believed Leny Yoro had been fouled in the build-up to Leeds’ opener, a call that never came.
While the red card grabbed headlines, Leeds had already done the damage where it mattered most, inside the penalty area.
Noah Okafor delivered a clinical first-half performance, scoring twice to put the visitors in control. His opener came from close range after good work down the flank, while his second took a fortunate deflection but reflected Leeds’ attacking intent.
United, by contrast, looked disjointed. There were glimpses of danger, with Benjamin Sesko going close, but the cutting edge simply was not there when it mattered.
Going down to ten men could have ended the contest early, but United showed some fight.
Casemiro pulled one back with a well-taken header from a Bruno Fernandes delivery, setting up a tense finish that briefly lifted the Old Trafford crowd.
Fernandes, however, chose his words carefully after the match, clearly frustrated but unwilling to openly criticise the officiating. It was a moment that summed up the mood inside the United camp.
Leeds had chances to put the game to bed, with Calvert-Lewin missing a clear opportunity, but they held on to secure a famous result.
For Leeds United, this was more than just three points. Winning at Old Trafford is a rarity, and doing so in the middle of a relegation battle makes it even more significant. The result lifts them further away from danger and reinforces the sense that Daniel Farke’s side are finding form at the right time.
For Manchester United, the bigger concern may lie ahead. Martinez now faces suspension for key fixtures against Chelsea, Brentford and Liverpool, leaving Carrick with a defensive headache at a crucial stage of the season.
In a campaign where margins are tight, moments like these can define trajectories. On this occasion, Leeds seized theirs. United, meanwhile, are left to reflect on what might have been.
