The national counterfeit goods unit recently executed a significant operation at a shopping mall located at the corner of Rahima Moosa and Von Wielligh Street in Johannesburg’s central business district (CBD). This action resulted in the confiscation of counterfeit items valued at approximately R15.5 million.
Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, spokesperson for the Gauteng police, provided details on the operation, emphasizing its scale and the variety of counterfeit goods seized.
This seizure follows a similar bust reported last week on Rahima Moosa Street, where counterfeit branded clothing worth R6.6 million was found in a factory. The operation uncovered over 7,000 items, including:
In addition to the counterfeit goods, police seized equipment used in the manufacturing of these items, including sewing machines, an overlocker machine, an embossing machine, a hot press, and numerous labels of well-known brands.
The recent operations highlight the ongoing efforts by the national counterfeit goods unit to combat the proliferation of counterfeit products in South Africa. These measures aim to protect consumers and genuine brands from the economic and reputational damage caused by counterfeit goods. The success of these operations demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement activities and underscores the significant challenge posed by counterfeit manufacturing and distribution networks.
