Investigators say official police vehicle movements match teen’s kidnapping timeline, placing 42-year-old officer at the scene.

The shocking abduction of 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi has taken an even darker turn, after an SAPS anti-gang unit officer, Nzima Adoons, was found to be in possession of the very police vehicle linked to the kidnapping.

The revelation, delivered in court this week, comes as Adoons faces charges of kidnapping and extortion, and sits in custody pending a bail decision scheduled for Thursday, July 10.

Tracking the Truth

According to testimony by the investigating officer, the white double-cab Toyota GD6 used in the abduction was an official SAPS vehicle assigned to Adoons at the time of the crime. It reportedly matched the vehicle seen following Baukudi’s car on the day she vanished.

Using SAPS’ internal vehicle tracking systems, investigators were able to confirm that no other GD6 vehicles in the department’s fleet were present in the area, placing Adoons’ assigned vehicle squarely at the scene.

The officer told the court, “Even our supply chain records show who had what vehicle on a particular day. The one in question, dark windows, anti-gang unit marking—was his.”

A Missing Teen, Found Alive

Baukudi, a learner at Martie du Plessis Special Needs School, was last seen being driven home when she was abducted. She was missing for 20 days before being found alive in Wepener, a town near the Lesotho border, by Free State police last Friday. Her safe return brought relief—but also left lingering questions.

Officer Denies Involvement

Despite the mounting evidence, Adoons has denied knowing Baukudi or her family, maintaining his innocence. But the State isn’t convinced.

Prosecutors have now upgraded the charges from Schedule 1 to Schedule 5, citing the seriousness of the crime—a move that could make bail harder to obtain.

A letter of intention to suspend has also been issued by SAPS, pending Adoons’ formal response. While not yet a suspension, the letter calls on him to justify why he should remain on the force amid the investigation.

Other Suspects Released, Hint at Lawsuit

In a twist on Monday, five other suspects initially linked to the case were released after the State could not connect them directly to the abduction. Media reports suggest these individuals may now sue the State, alleging wrongful arrest and police brutality during their detention.

A Community in Shock

The case has rocked Bloemfontein and sparked a public outcry over alleged abuse of authority within the police ranks. On social media, locals have expressed horror and disbelief that someone entrusted with fighting crime could be implicated in such a heinous act.

“How can we feel safe when the police are the ones kidnapping our kids?” one Facebook user commented under a local news post.

The Free State SAPS has yet to comment in detail on the arrest but said it will cooperate fully with the investigation.

What Comes Next

As the bail hearing looms, and calls for accountability grow louder, the case of Kamogelo Baukudi is quickly becoming a symbol of deeper trust issues between citizens and law enforcement in South Africa.

For now, the focus remains on justice, not only for Kamogelo, but for every South African who expects safety and integrity from the people in blue.

This case is developing.
