The South African Police Service’s Anti-Gang Unit is investigating a brutal double murder and attempted murder after unknown assailants stormed a Kariega home in the early hours of Saturday, 5 July 2025, and opened fire on three sleeping women.

The harrowing attack occurred at a residence in Pompano Crescent, Tiryville, where police say the suspects forcibly kicked open the front door before carrying out the execution-style shooting.

Victims Targeted in Their Sleep

According to provincial SAPS spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, the attackers proceeded directly to a bedroom where the women were sleeping and unleashed a volley of bullets.

  • Fredirika Booysen (46) and Teresa Pullen (32) were both pronounced dead at the scene, having sustained multiple fatal gunshot wounds.

  • A third woman, also in her 30s, survived the attack and was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

The victims appear to have been specifically targeted, but at this stage, no motive has been confirmed.

Motive Unknown, Investigation Underway

Authorities are piecing together the events that led to the deadly home invasion. The Anti-Gang Unit is leading the investigation, given the execution-style nature of the killings and the potential link to gang-related activity or personal vendettas.

“An extensive investigation is underway,” said Captain Janse Van Rensburg. “We are determined to bring those responsible to justice.”

Police Appeal for Public Help

The SAPS is calling on any members of the public who may have information about the incident or the suspects involved to come forward.

  • Captain Neville Gouws can be reached at 082 387 5904

  • Crime Stop: 08600 10111

  • Tips can also be submitted at any local police station

All information provided will be treated confidentially, and anonymous tips are welcome.

Community in Shock

The double murder has sent shockwaves through the Kariega community, where residents are grappling with the violence that unfolded in a quiet residential street. Local leaders and organisations are calling for increased protection and visible policing in vulnerable areas.

As the investigation unfolds, the police are urging anyone with surveillance footage, eyewitness accounts, or suspicious activity around Pompano Crescent to come forward.
