As critical repairs to the O2 pipeline move forward, thousands of Johannesburg residents are still without clean drinking water. The city has announced emergency alternative water supply points to assist communities most affected by the ongoing disruption.

Rand Water has confirmed that repairs to the O2 pipeline are “on track” but warned that the extensive maintenance work requires time and patience.

Emergency Water Points Set Up in CBD and Surrounds

With the South Hills reservoir impacted by maintenance on the Palmiet system, residents in areas like Ward 56 in the Johannesburg CBD are among the worst hit.

To ease the pressure, the City of Johannesburg has deployed water tankers and set up temporary water collection points. These include:

  • Corner of Elizabeth and Augusta

  • Corner of Retha and Prince Albert

  • Corner of East Street and Johan Meyer

These locations are expected to remain active until the full restoration of supply.

Why the Repairs Are Taking Time

According to Rand Water, the delays are due to the complexity of the infrastructure and strict safety protocols.

“Before we can begin repairs, we must isolate the affected pipeline by shutting off several massive valves. This process is physically demanding and time-consuming,” the utility explained.

Once isolated, workers must also completely drain and ventilate the system to ensure a safe working environment inside the pipelines.

“These steps may seem slow, but they are crucial for the safety of the team and the long-term health of the water infrastructure,” Rand Water added.

Ensuring Long-Term Reliability

While residents continue to queue at water tankers, officials are urging patience, saying the upgrades will ultimately lead to a more reliable supply.

“Systematic maintenance like this ensures Johannesburg’s water infrastructure can continue serving millions of residents sustainably,” Rand Water stated.

Residents are encouraged to follow updates on official City of Johannesburg platforms and to use water sparingly where it is still available.
